Picture-book shapes

Square books, 8 × 8 and 9 × 9, are the classic picture-book shape and fit small hands. Landscape, 11 × 8.5, gives illustrations a wide stage across each spread.

Artwork that prints well

  • Paint or export art at 300 pixels per inch at the printed size
  • Run backgrounds 0.125 in past the trim on every edge
  • Keep words 0.25 in inside the trim, and clear of the bound edge
  • Lay out single pages, even if you designed in spreads

How many pages does a picture book need?

Picture books often run 24 or 32 pages. You can print from 20 to 160, in steps of 2.

Can I print a single proof copy?

Yes. Print one to read aloud and check the colors, then order more.

Hardcover or softcover for children?

Hardcovers stand up to little hands and last on a shelf. A softcover costs less, which suits a giveaway or a classroom set.
